8 Leggings That Are Cooler Than Basic Black

I have a confession to make. I can be judgmental when it comes to clothing. To be CRYSTAL CLEAR, I don’t mean i’d ever judge anyone for not wearing all the latest designer trends, in fact, I skew the opposite direction and fault people for wearing those God awful $800 sneakers that look like you’ve got two melted rubber bricks at the end of your legs.
I think we moms can do better. In fact I KNOW we can do better, Mom’s can wake before dawn, feed and clothe their household, work a full day (in or out of the home), calm a hysterical tween or lovesick teen, and clip a flailing babies translucent nails without incident all before bedtime. If we can do all of that, then we can and definitely DESERVE to wear something more inspired than a plain, black, yoga pant every day.
The Pant That Knew Too Much
I once was a girl who spent an above average portion of her income on often wacky, sometimes fancy, and usually itchy clothing because it looked the way I wanted to look, and I was willing to sacrifice comfort for style.
However, I have recently transitioned squarely into the phase of my life where I feel like i’m trapped in my post baby body with loose skin and looser boobs. I now fully understand the allure of yoga pants outside of the yoga studio. They FEEL the way I want to feel. Like a good long hug. Snug, secure, and forgiving, a good pair will grab you around your waist and give you enough room to breathe. Now that I think about it, that sounds like a good man too lol.
But you get my point, they feel great, those huggy pants of ours, but aren’t they kind of uninspired in their basic black life? Yes, in their neutrality they so easily appear to slip under the radar, but do they really go unnoticed? Or are we quietly labeled as “schlumpy” or “letting ourselves go”?
I’m proud to be a Mom, it’s totally badass on so many levels, my finest achievement yet, and I admit, it could be my own wide ranging neuroses… but I REFUSE to be labelled as a “schlumpy”, or whatever judgmental Judy (not you Mom) or John may call me, and yeah, I do actually care what they think. Kinda. So I’ve updated my yoga pant game in order to feel more put together each day. I also religiously fill in my eyebrows each morning.
Now, I’ve searched high and low to find interesting colored and patterned yoga pants in flattering fits that will still fall into the “wardrobe staple” category but also help you elevate your clothing game from an “I got dressed in the dark” shirt/pant combo, to “an outfit,” that still gets put on in the dark (because that’s what you probably actually do everyday).
Here are my current faves ladies… they’re all over the place price wise, but if we wear them so often, it’s totally worth it, and don’t worry, i’m working on the VERY IMPORTANT follow-up post about jeans… the other wardrobe staple.
Take the Printed Route
I stumbled upon this exact pair of leopard leggings and shouldv’e bought two pairs, I love them so much. Disclaimer: I love all things leopard print so naturally these would be at the top of my list, but these are a “chill” leopard that I wouldn’t feel garish showing up for school pick-up in them. There are also great similar prints Here and Extended Sizes Here.
These P.E. Nation leggings are rad, in fact I kinda love all their clothes, but these can literally be paired with a never ending assortment of white/blue/black/rock&roll shirts with these, some Veja sneakers, and a cool Coat or denim jacket and you’re good through fall!
I kinda love these, I haven’t bought a pair yet so the jury is out on weather those thigh bands will be flattering on the average body…but I love love love the color, it’s so neutral that it could be worn in any season, yet the bands add some interest without being too showy. Anyways, Alo and Zappos both have pretty great return policies, so if the bands are a no-go, no problem.
Add A Little Color To Your Closet
Now, this color may not be for everyone, but this legging assuredly is, it comes in 13 different colors and a size run up to 16/18 and promises to “lift and sculpt your rear”, where do I sign? Amazon also has extended size runs of similar leggings up to 3x and 15+ colors/patterns here. Yay!
Gotta admit, i’m a sucker for an earth tone and these fit the bill, again, a color that works with every season. Enough said.
Some other great places to find fresh leggings not mentioned above are:
- Old Navy & Victorias Secret Sport have very thick leggings that don’t go sheer when you bend
- Onezie has a ton of fun patterns
- Beyond Yoga & Old Navy have extended sizes to 3x
Ok Ladies, there you have it! A few fresh legging styles to spice up your day to day… and remember to keep an eye out for my upcoming post on cool mom jeans!
